Configuring SQL Server for HDS

You need Microsoft SQL Server and SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) if you use the Historical Data Server (HDS) for event logging, trend recording, or both. See Operating system and PC requirements for a list of supported SQL Server versions.

note

The use of the HDS is not mandatory. You can alternatively use the other types of archive units supported by PcVue for event logging and trend recording.

SQL Server Express edition

Small to medium sized projects may find the free and downloadable Express edition is suitable. The main limitations of the Express edition are as follows:

  • The maximum size of each relational database is 10 GB
  • The maximum memory that can be used by the SQL Server Database Engine is 1 GB
  • The SQL Agent administration tool is not included in Express
  • The limit on the buffer cache for each instance is 1 MB of RAM
  • The relational database engine is restricted to the lesser of one socket or four cores

Installation recommendations

The installation process may vary depending on the exact version you are installing and the operating system. The following is a recommendation for a typical installation of the Express edition.

important

If SQL Server is on a different PC than PcVue, or if you use replication, use Mixed Mode (SQL + Windows authentication).

  1. Run the installer executable (for example SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe). In the SQL Server Installation Center, run the System Configuration Checker. If the setup support check reports errors or warnings, investigate and correct them, and then click Re-run to validate again.
  2. In the Installation Center, click Options, confirm or select the architecture, click Installation, and then click New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
  3. In the SQL Server Setup wizard, complete the initial pages: accept License Terms, review Product Updates according to your IT policy, and click Install for Setup Support Files.
  4. In Feature Selection, select Database Engine Services and Management Tools - Complete, review prerequisites in the right pane, and click Next.
  5. In Instance Configuration, select a named instance or the default instance, click Next, then in Server Configuration set SQL Server Browser startup type to Automatic and click Next.
  6. In Database Engine Configuration, select either Windows Authentication or Mixed Mode:
    • Windows Authentication: Recommended when SQL Server is on the same PC as PcVue and replication is not used.
    • Mixed Mode (SQL + Windows authentication): Recommended when SQL Server is on a different PC than PcVue, or when replication is used. Enter and confirm the sa password.
  7. In the same page, click Add... and/or Add Current User so at least the Administrators group and the current user have unrestricted access to SQL Server, then click Next to start installation.
  8. Monitor Installation Progress. When setup is complete, click Next, then close SQL Server Configuration Manager.
